Home

Some Copper family history from my lineage.  Many of my relatives fought in the American Civil War.  We have war veterans in my lineage all the way back to the American Revolution.  Some of my family members were killed in action defending America.  In recent times some of our sons have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  • Served in the Civil War ~ Enlisted in Company B, 9th Cavalry Regiment Indiana as a Private on 13 November 1863.  Mustered out on 08 June 1865.
d. 07 Sep 1926 in Wilkinson, Indiana
    m. 1st ca 1868 to Ella Hiday
     m. 2nd 15 Nov 1886 in Hancock County, Indiana to Frances Madora Heck

  • Served in the Civil War ~ Enlisted Company G, 12th Infantry Regiment Indiana as a Sergeant 1st Class 19 Jul 1962 - Promoted to Full Lieutenant 2nd Class on 04 March 1864 effective 29 April 1864 - Promoted to Full Lieutenant 1st Class on 16 October 1864 effective 01 January 1865 - Mustered out 08 Jun 1865 in Washington D C
  • Shoe maker with a shop in Fortville, Hancock, Indiana
d. 22 Dec 1911 at the Veterans Home in Marion, Grant, Indiana

  • Served in the Civil War ~ Co G - 12th Indiana Infantry, Private, Enlisted 01 Aug 1862 - Mustered out 08 Jun 1865 in Washington D C
  • Nov 08, 1866 - THE FORTVILLE MURDER -- "We announced in our last that a murder had been committed at Fortville, in this county.  The victim was Eli Prickett, the murderer Benjamin Copper.  The fight grew out of an old grudge.  As Copper is under bonds for $4,000 for his appearance at the February term of the Circuit Court we think it just that the facts in the case should reach the public at the trial.  Let the law take its course." The jury found Great Great Uncle Ben innocent.  They jury stated the victim deserved what he got.  The victim was beaten to death by Ben's fists.  The victim made a statement that all the Copper's should have been killed in the civil war.
  • The 1870 census shows Ben as being a farmer.  The 1900 and 1910 census show him as a barber.  The 1910 census indicates he had his own barber shop in Jackson, Madison, Indiana.
