- Nov 08, 1866 - THE FORTVILLE MURDER -- "We announced
in our last issue that a murder had been committed at Fortville,
in this county. The victim was Eli Prickett, the murderer
Benjamin Copper. The fight grew out of an old grudge. As
Copper is under bonds for $4,000 for his appearance at the
February term of the Circuit Court we think it just that the
facts in the case should reach the public at the trial. Let
the law take its course." The jury found Great Great
Uncle Ben innocent. They jury stated the victim
deserved what he got. The victim was beaten to death
by Ben's fists. The victim made a statement that all
the Copper's should have been killed in the civil war.
- The 1870 census shows Ben as being a farmer. The
1900 and 1910 census show him as a barber. The 1910 census
indicates he had his own barber shop in Jackson, Madison,
Indiana.
