Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of the questions I am often asked by students in my CGS 1100 course.
1. Q: How can I get off to a good start in the course?
A: Read and comply with the course syllabus. If there is something you do not understand about the syllabus tell your instructor. Your access to the Blackboard quizzes ends December 9, 2009 at 3:15 p.m. Of course you will have access to the final exam during finals week.
2. Q: What is Blackboard?
A: A means of course delivery that uses the internet.
3. Q: How are exams administered?
A: Via Blackboard. You will also see the number of points per exam and the cut off date for the exam. You may do the exams anytime before the cut off date. You will do the exams in class.
4. Q: Where can I take the exams?
A: You may take the practice exams in the classroom, in the learning center, or on any computer that has internet access such as your home. Yes, you may use your book or notes for any exam. I expect you to take the regular exams in the classroom with no help from anyone. Regular exams are 100 point exams.
5. Q: Since the exams are administered on the internet do I have to attend class?
A: Attendance will be taken.
6. Q: Can I work ahead and finish the class before the end of the semester?
A: Yes you can. Inform your instructor once you finish the course. Although you may finish the course early your final grade will not be posted until the end of the semester.
7. Q: Do I need to look at Blackboard email?
A: Yes, do so on a regular basis. Your instructor can tell if you read your email. You may email your instructor with Web CT email.
8. Q: How do I start the course, this method of learning is new to me?
A: First look under exams and learn how to find out when the due dates are for the exams. Then you might want to take a practice exam just to get an idea on what the questions look like. After this start taking the practice exam until you score well. From here take the regular exam. You might also check out the authors' supporting information concerning the subject matter. However you start do not procrastinate. I'll be in class to mentor you should you have any problems. Whatever you do, don't panic. Most students do well in this course once they get comfortable with Blackboard and how it works. Good Luck.
9. Q: Would you give me a letter of reference if I do well in the course?
A: Yes, I have done many such letters for students who get an "A" or a "B" in the course.
10. Any more useful advice?
A: Don't forget the college has a career center. Its free to you. They also can help you get a part time job as well as a full time job. I find the the people in the jobs center very friendly, go see them.
